West Worcestershire's Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate, Richard Burt, today joined the YouTube youth phenomenon by calling for tougher action on climate change via the online video website YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlobSnu0HCs). This followed a meeting with Friends of the Earth who are calling for the Climate Change Bill, currently going through Parliament, to be toughened up in a number of ways.
The Climate Change Bill, which is set to become law in the near future will create a legal framework for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK. Friends of the Earth's Chris Williams went to visit Mr Burt to gain his support for a stronger Climate Change Bill. The Liberal Democrat candidate agreed that there should be annual targets for cuts in carbon dioxide emissions, that aviation emissions be counted and that the target for emissions cuts by 2050 should be far greater than 60%.
Richard's climate change video is not only on YouTube but also on the Friends of the Earth Big Ask website (http://www.thebigask.com/index.php?f=1191324476700_05).
Chris Williams of Friends of the Earth comments "I am encouraged that Richard Burt is supporting all of our aims to strengthen the Climate Change Bill and will vote accordingly in Parliament if he is elected. I would also like to see local MPs come on board, so that we can make sure the climate change law has real teeth".
Richard Burt commented "I am completely behind Friends of the Earth's calls for a stronger climate change bill. Climate change is one of the biggest issues we are facing today and we have to take decisive action. We now need to ensure that the climate change legislation has the power to achieve year on year cuts in carbon dioxide emissions".
