Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, Richard Burt and local Liberal Democrat, Steve Brown are backing residents in Upper Welland opposed to plans to close their post office and replace it with an outreach service.
The Post Office, which is open for 15 hours each week, will be replaced by a mobile service for three hours on Thursday afternoons under post office plans.
Following a rally attended by nearly 50 residents outside the post office last weekend, Graham George, Chairman of Upper Welland Community Group said:
"I was very pleased with the turnout on Saturday. It just goes to show the depth of feeling amongst local people opposed to closing our post office.
"We conducted a survey amongst people who turned up and will be submitting their concerns in a report to the review process.
"Most people said that Thursday afternoon was about the most inconvenient time of the week that the post Office could chose to offer a mobile service."
Richard Burt said: "I just don't think the Post Office realise that people without transport will be faced with a two hour journey to travel to Welland post office and back, or face a steep walk down into the village from the Wells Road when they get off the bus.
"Either way, it will make life very difficult for older people without transport to access postal services when they need to."
Steve Brown said: "If Upper Welland post office is closed and replaced with a limited service on Thursday afternoons, it won't be long before they decide to withdraw the service completely because most people simply won't be able to use it."
Richard Burt and Steve Brown will submit their own comments to the consultation before the deadline of 7th October.
