Commenting on today's announcement that the Post Office would retain Post Office Card Account business until 2015, West Worcestershire's Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, Richard Burt said the government's decision was "an eleventh-hour conversion that has saved what's left of the post office network.
He said the decision was a triumph for the Sub-postmasters campaign and would save the door from closing on a further 3000 post offices.
"Ministers were still frozen into the tendering process that would have resulted in the new contract being awarded to PayPoint", said Mr Burt
"The 'Hand of Mandy' has saved the business. There is no doubt in my mind that Peter Mandelson booted the tendering process into touch at the eleventh hour and saved the day for the Post Office.
"At last, someone in government has seen the light of day and we must all be very thankful for that, although ministers must now compensate PayPoint for their reasonable costs after withdrawing the tender."
