Upton's Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Richard Burt has today written to the Leader of Malvern Hills District Council, Serena Croad, calling on her to scrap council plans to relocate Upton Tourist Information Centre inside the town's Heritage Centre.
In his letter to Councillor Croad, Richard Burt said that re-housing the TIC within the Heritage Centre would be damaging to both and restrict prospects for future tourism in the town.
He said that plans were already in place to develop the Heritage Centre and that they would be ruined if the council pressed ahead with the changes.
"There is already a scheme in place, supported by a £30,000 'Better Welcome' tourism grant from Advantage West Midlands to encourage more visitors into the town.
"An important element of that grant is the damp proofing, repair and development of the Heritage Centre with refurbishment of the existing displays and a computer controlled interactive video programme telling the story of Upton.
"This simply will not be able to happen within the limited space available if the TIC has to be housed there as well in a cost cutting exercise by the council.
"It doesn't make any sense to do this, either for the future Development of the Heritage Centre, or for the TIC which was independently rated as the best in Worcestershire.
"I know that feelings are running very high on this issue and hope that Councillor Croad will put tourism and business in Upton first by listening to local concerns."
