Local Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, Richard Burt today expressed his deep concern at a 45.08% annual rise in unemployment across Worcestershire, with those receiving Job Seekers' Allowance rising to 8,017 last November.
Government figures show that unemployment rose most in Redditch constituency (62.3%) and Mid Worcestershire constituency(61.6%).
Worcester City (32.8%) and West Worcestershire (37.5%) suffered the lowest increases.
There were 748 people claiming Job Seekers' Allowance in West Worcestershire last November, up 204 on the total for the same period in 2007.
Rural and urban areas have been hit equally hard in Worcestershire, although there are sharp variations due to localised job losses.
Unemployment has now increased overall since Labour came to power.
Commenting, Richard said: "These figures are deeply worrying, and I am very concerned about the effect the current downturn is having on people across the county. Jobs are being lost in almost every sector, from low-paid unskilled work to the hi-tech sector.
"As order books dry up and jobs are lost, government must take positive steps towards a Green road to recovery, investing in public transport and home insulation. Doing nothing is not an option.
"Banks must get the wheels of business turning again. Every home and family is paying a very high price for those huge City bonuses."
