Richard Burt with Tanya Killerby outside the proposed new toilet block on a recent visit to Tenbury
Richard Burt is backing disabled campaigner, Tanya Killerby in her bid to reinstate plans for a disabled toilet in Tenbury.
The plans for a dedicated disabled toilet as part of the new facilities in Market Street were dropped to save money.
Mrs Killerby, who lives in Malvern and spent time in Tenbury on her honeymoon, has written to local Leader of Malvern Hills District Council, Councillor Phil Grove, but has received no reply.
"Unless you are disabled, it's really hard to understand how important it is to have a purpose built toilet," said Tanya.
"Putting additional equipment into the Ladies and Gentlemen's toilet is not good because wheelchair users need much more space and disabled people are much more at risk of picking up infections.
"My concern is whether there will be enough room for a wheelchair user and two carers."
Richard Burt, who visited the proposed site with Tanya, said: "It is mean spirited and penny pinching to build a new toilet block without dedicated disabled facilities.
"The town's other toilets are 500 metres away and have dedicated facilities, so why would you build a new set in Market Street without? Surely disabled people, with less mobility, should be the first consideration.
"Mencap say that across the country, over 230,000 people need dedicated toilets with a changing bench, hoist, and space for a wheelchair and two carers.
"Without them, carers are often forced to change their family members on dirty toilet floors. This is unhygienic, degrading and undignified.
"It is completely unacceptable for the district council to save money at the cost of dignity for disabled people visiting the town."
