Final Hurdle For Upton Flood Defences8.05.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 16th Aug 2009 Richard Burt is now more confident that Upton will get its delayed flood defences next year, following discussions with the Environment Agency's newly appointed Delivery Project Manager, Nick Balsdon. Richard contacted the Environment Agency following local concerns over progress with the project. Richard said:"Some people were worried that the funding might fall foul of government cuts following the recession, but a lot of hard work has been going on behind the scenes to prepare for the final hurdle. "A detailed business case will now go before the National Review Group in the first week of September, supported in person by the Environment Agency's Regional Director, Mark Sitton-Smith. "Plans are also in place to present revised proposals for the Waterside to Upton residents at the same time. "People will have a chance to comment after expressing concerns over the visual impact of a barrier wall along the riverfront. "Landscaping and architecture will be used to break up the wall and enhance its appearance, with raised walkways and dining areas to give a clear view of the river. "There are also proposals to raise the camber of the A4104 by the Fire Station 0.5m to complete the town's flood protection." "The Environment Agency hope to complete the scheme in two phases, with construction work on the New Street bund starting in April or May next year, and the Waterfront barrier starting in September."
