End UK Childhood Food Poverty

Food poverty

Dear Harriett Baldwin and Nigel Huddleston

We the undersigned support the campaign led by Marcus Rashford, Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in calling on Boris Johnson to review the government's free school meals policy and request that you, as our MP use your influence to push for this change.

We welcome the comment from No 10 that "no child will ever go hungry" because of the Covid pandemic but the latest statistics show us that one in three (4.1 million) children live in poverty in the UK, with an estimated 2.5 million living in food insecure households. We need to see a strategy to help end child food poverty before the summer holidays.

We support the request to offer free school meals over the holiday periods. For some young people this is the only warm meal of the day, and it is important that we continue to support all young people in their development.

We also support the need to review the threshold for being eligible for free school meals and, in the long term, hope to see free school meals offered to all pupils in state education. This will give all young people the opportunity to access a nutritious meal during their learning.

Thank you for your interest but we are no longer running this campaign.
